Three Rivers Health & Safety Consultancy Ltd were delighted to be selected to support Costain Group Ltd on a significant north-east road network improvement stretching over approximately four miles of the A1 between junctions 65 (Birtley) and junction 67 (Coal House)

The works in the project included widening the existing road between junctions to help manage traffic joining and leaving the A1:

  • Northbound – Increase the number of lanes from two to three
  • Southbound – Increase the number of lanes from three to four.
  • Junctions 65, 66 & 67 were modified to accommodate the additional lanes.
  • Installation of additional gantries, street furniture and piling works.

Additional works also included replacing the Allerdene Railway Bridge, which carried the A1 over the East Coast mainline railway. The bridge, which had been standing for nearly 40 years, required regular extensive maintenance, which disrupted traffic on the A1. A new replacement bridge was installed south of the previous Allerdene Railway Bridge, allowing for its demolition.
